Christopher Bates

Bassist, composer, collaborator from Minneapolis.

About Me

Chris Bates is on a lifelong journey of musical discovery. Chris has studied the bass with James Clute (Minnesota Orchestra) and reknowned jazz bassist Anthony Cox. Self taught on the electric bass Chris has always pushed himself to explore new musical styles from around the world and has blossomed into a very creative and supportive bass player. In the 90’s Chris played with the Motion Poets, touring nationally and releasing three albums to wide critical acclaim. Mr. Bates recieved a McKnight Composers Fellowship for his compostions in 1999. As a first call bassist in the Midwest, Chris has played with many wonderful musicians including Mose Allison, John Medeski, Tony Hymas, Lee Konitz, Joe Lovano, Steven Bernstein, Bill Carrothers and Eric Alexander. Chris has played on over 30 albums and brings and unbridled joy and enthusiasm to every musical situation he plays in. In the fall of 2012 Chris released his debut album as a leader. Chris Bates’ Red 5 “New Hope” has received accolades from around the country and was the only jazz album to be included in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune’s Critics Tally of the best local music of 2012. “New Hope” is a showcase for Chris’ composing and features Jt Bates on drums, Brandon Wozniak and Chris Thomson on saxophones and Zack Lozier on trumpet. Chris is a member of several bands: Atlantis Quartet, Red Planet and Framework, and tours regularly with guitarist Todd Clouser. My Jazz Story

I love jazz because... It offers personal freedom and community with the audience. I was first exposed to jazz... As a child by my father and brothers. I met [musician name]... many people The best show I ever attended was... Ornette Coleman Quartet The first jazz record I bought was... John Patitucci or Stanley Clarke can't remember exactly. My advice to new listeners... If it makes you feel good, it is good. Or whatever else you have in mind.
