I love jazz because of the optimism that this music projects. I was first exposed to jazz at an early age. My dad would put on recordings of Oscar Peterson, Louis Armstrong, Wynton Marsalis, The first jazz record I bought with my own money was Wynton Marsalis's Standard Time, Volume 1. I was in 7th grade. My advice to new listeners is to listen with intent. Try to learn something from every moment. Evaluate based on your true emotional experience with the music, not someone else's judgement.
