Antonio Álvarez Barthe

About Me

Antonio is a career diplomat and jazz fan currently living in Madrid (Spain)

I was born in León (Spain) exactly nine months after the release of John Coltrane's A Love Supreme (no connection between the two events, according to my parents.) A premature die-hard fan of The Rolling Stones, in 1982 I was caught under the spell of the sound of a horn played in the track Slave, of the Tatto You album. An enlightened friend told me that the sound had been produced by a guy called Sonny Rollins, a jazz musician, and a few months later rock records were already outnumbered by jazz records in my shelves.

A career diplomat, I have lived in China, Syria and Morocco and availed myself of every opportunity to promote Spanish and European jazz in these countries. Despite my total lack of experience in jazz writing, AAJ’s Spanish language senior editor and old friend Joan A. Cararach seems to believe that my eclectic opinions could be of some use here. Well, you know who to blame.
