About Me

JAZZ PIANIST: Our trio (with Ravi Abcarian on bass and Bryan Bowman on drums) recorded its debut album in early 2022 on the Digital Victrola Label. I've also recently recorded with the Jeff Sanford Nonet.

TEACHER: I teach piano at my home in Oakland, California. I also teach at Oaktown Jazz Workshop (an after school program for students ages 10 to 18).

AUTHOR: My book/audio series, “Play Jazz, Blues, Rock PIANO BY EAR,” was published by Mel Bay Publications in 2004 and remains in print today.

Other musical endeavors have included studying cello, harpsichord, and Javanese Court Gamelan.

My Jazz Story

The best jazz show I ever attended: The HERBIE HANCOCK TRIO, with Buster Williams and Al Foster. The first jazz record I bought: The OSCAR PETERSON TRIO + ONE with Ray Brown, Ed Thigpen, and Clark Terry.

My House Concert Story

The energy and focus of a house concert is terrific. I've done a few with clarinetist, Ben Goldberg, and a number with the Jeff Sanford Septet / Nonet.
