My Jazz Story
Jazz and Improvisatory forms of music
offer excitement and risk, while at the
same time a well structured composition
can provide something familiar for an
audience to embrace.
Before I knew what "swing" was, I was
first introduced to the power of the
rhythmic inflection by way of Duke
Ellington Live at Newport 1956 in my
father's record collection.
When I finally purchased my first "jazz"
record, I chose Coltrane's Giant Steps. It
took me no time to relate the power of
that record back to my early exposure.
Since then I have remained vigilant in
study, practice, and performance through
various jazz influenced, jazz adjacent, and
Black American Music/straight ahead
swing/Hard Bop idioms; as well as I n my
own personal listening time.
