Musician · Composer · Music Therapist · Researcher
Andrea Ruocco is an Italian bassist, composer, music therapist, and researcher active in the fields of jazz, improvised music, sound art, and interdisciplinary artistic research. His work combines composition, improvisation, ethnomusicology, sound studies, and experimental practices, with a particular focus on Gnawa musical traditions, sound identity, and situated sonic knowledge. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Sound Studies and Sonic Art at the Conservatory of Music “F. A. Bonporti” of Trento and Riva del Garda. His doctoral research project, Sound and Identity in Gnawa Tradition: Artistic Research, Sound Technologies and Formalization of Situated Models, investigates the relationship between sound, rituality, identity, artistic research, and technology through an ethical and anti-colonial approach to sonic studies. His PhD supervisors are Prof. Nicola Straffelini (composer and professor at the Conservatory of Trento) and Prof. Guido Battista Raschieri (ethnomusicologist at the University of Trento). Alongside his artistic activity, Andrea works as a professional music therapist and educator, integrating creative, relational, and interdisciplinary methodologies into both performance and research contexts.
