I love jazz because it lives from community. It's not music you play alone in a basement; it happens when people listen to each other, respond, and create something together. I was first exposed to jazz through a teacher at my school who had worked as a professional musician. I had started out on classical guitar, and he showed me my first steps into jazz on the grand piano when I was 14. I met pianist Tizian Jost in master classes, and I've been lucky to receive online career coaching from Emmet Cohen, whose living-room jam sessions with fellow musicians have always inspired me. The best show I ever attended was the Emmet Cohen Trio at the Zig Zag Jazz Club in Berlin. His virtuosity at the piano blew me away, but what stayed with me even more was how he kept stepping back to feature his bassist and drummer. The first jazz record I bought was Trouble by Benjamin Herman. I love the smooth way he can play his Alto Sax. My advice to new listeners: Don't just listen to the soloist. Listen to how the musicians talk to each other. That conversation is where the magic happens. My motto is “Old soul, new sound”: I respect where this music comes from, but I want to find my own way of speaking it. One day, I hope to play a tour in Japan. I deeply admire the gentle, collaborative way Japanese piano trios play together. To to so I invest quite some time to learn their language ;-)

A'Jazz Jam Session, Freising The A'Jazz Jam Session is a community-driven jazz event in Freising dedicated to fostering musical exchange and strengthening the local jazz scene. Founded by Alexander Wittges in 2025, the session has become a regular meeting point for jazz musicians and audiences in the region, with eleven editions taking place between its launch and September 2026. Inspired by the tradition of classic jazz sessions, each evening begins with a performance by the Alexander Wittges Trio, featuring a mix of jazz standards and original compositions. Following the opening set, the stage is opened for spontaneous ensemble combinations, bringing together musicians from different backgrounds, generations, and musical perspectives. Unlike rehearsed concert formats, the music is created in the moment. Familiar standards, blues forms, and contemporary jazz repertoire provide a common language through which musicians can interact, improvise, and explore new artistic ideas. Each session becomes a unique musical experience shaped by the participants present that evening. Beyond the music itself, A'Jazz Jam serves as a platform for building connections within the regional jazz community. It creates opportunities for musicians to meet new collaborators, develop artistic partnerships, and discover potential bandmates for future performances and projects. By providing a regular gathering place for experienced jazz musicians, the session contributes to the growth and visibility of jazz culture in Freising and the surrounding region. For audiences, the event offers an opportunity to experience jazz in its most authentic form: spontaneous, conversational, and unpredictable. For musicians, it provides an environment where artistic exchange, creative dialogue, and community-building take place through the shared language of jazz. A'Jazz Jam reflects an ongoing commitment to supporting the development of a vibrant local jazz community while creating opportunities for meaningful musical encounters, artistic growth, and future collaborations.
