My Jazz Story
I love jazz because...It speaks to my spirit like no other music.
I was first exposed to jazz...11 years old. Herbie Hancock led me to
Miles, which led me to Monk. When I discovered Monk I was hooked.
I met [musician name]...Count Basie after a show on my college campus.
Wynton and Branford Marsalis after a show. Separately they asked that
we not leave the hotel lobby before they had a chance to talk with us.
The best show I ever attended was...Sonny Rollins at Artpark(NY). He
hit the stage at encore level and never backed off.
The first jazz record I bought was...Headhunters by Herbie Hancock.
My advice to new listeners...Find what you like and follow the sidemen
and composers. Always dabble in something you have not heard. Dabble
in what you have heard about from others.
