Turtle Island blurs lines between classical and jazz

What is a string quartet? What is a jazz band?

If you take even a moment before answering, then Mark Summer would like to play you some music. As cellist for the Turtle Island String Quartet, he has made a career of offering an alternative to the norm.

We get to play off of people's expectations," Summer said of the group, which performs with pianist Kenny Barron tomorrow in The Kentucky Center's Bomhard Theater as part of the Lonesome Pine Specials concert series.

“You see four guys up there with string instruments, and it seems like we're going to be playing Mozart, Hayden or Beethoven. And of course we don't do that."

What Turtle Island does play are works written by its members and such jazz composers as John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock and Stanley Clarke.
