Plenty of jazz news this week from a smokin' living room concert CD to the lost" Jimmy McGary tape and a new jazz club."
Jazz benefactor David Hall has given us another in the tremendous series of his living room concerts" with the release of Trio Con Brio" featuring piano man Phil DeGreg along with guitarist Dan Faehnle and bassist Paul Keller. The three don't just play with brio" but are downright smokin' on this session, which DeGreg describes as reminiscent of the early Oscar Peterson and Nat Cole jazz trios, a swinging energy created without drums."
The session was recorded in the Indian Hill home of Hall, a former Eagle-Picher executive, with DeGreg performing on Hall's custom-made Bosendorfer, considered the Rolls Royce of pianos. Veteran band manager, producer and guitarist Stan Hertzman produced the session, which is part of several CDs that Hall has underwritten capturing Cincinnati's piano greats including Frank Vincent, Lee Stolar, Steve Schmidt and DeGreg.
They came and started to click. It rolled out beautifully," Hertzman said of the latest session, which plays spontaneous and loaded with improv. There is no set-up or rehearsal at these shows. I go in there and get some levels. If it's a hot session like this, every one immediately cranks up a level or two. They played great. There was no up-tightness you can get with some of these sessions. And it's not easy to walk in and play for 12 people."
Hertzman said jazz guitar lovers will enjoy Faehnle's work. He's terrific. He played more notes in one night than I've played in my whole life."
