“It's very satisfying to have opened up a new space for this writing to happen," says founder, editor and publisher, Pete Gershon. “I try to approach our subject matter like we're a scientific journal for music, with a real sense of scholarship and objectivity. But, I also look for writing that's relevant to all readers, regardless of what their previous experience with the music might be."
Signal to Noise was founded in September 1997 to document the confluence of free jazz, electro-acoustics and modern rock, with a special emphasis on independent production and grassroots promotion. Each quarterly issue features exclusive in-depth articles, original photography, and over one hundred reviews of key new music releases and reissues.
“If you look at some of our recent cover stories, Public Enemy, DJ Spooky and Matthew Shipp and The Master Musicians of Jajouka suggest different styles of music," Gershon explains, “but the essence of the magazine really lies in what these various artists have in common. They're spanning genres, dissolving boundaries, and pushing the music forward."
