With members from Brazil, Colombia, Puerto Rico and the U.S., the group has been performing for over fifteen years in Florida.
Aberto is the fourth recording by Brazilian group O Som Do Jazz, based in the Tampa Bay area. On the Isospin Lab label, the title means “open” in Portuguese. With members from Brazil, Colombia, Puerto Rico and the U.S., the group has been performing for over fifteen years in Florida and has backed visiting Brazilian artists in concerts including Diego Figueiredo, Antonio Adolfo, Jovino Santos Neto and Francois de Lima. The recording has seven original compositions by trombonist David Manson and finishes with “Foi a noite" by Tom Jobim.
The styles range from samba-jazz, Bossa Nova, MPB and Baiao. Andrea Moraes Manson (a Carioca) wrote the lyrics for two songs and sings a total of three on the recording. She prefers a full voice approach and her favorite singers include Elis Regina, Elza Soares and Clara Nunes. Alejandro Arenas (bass) and Mark Feinman (drums) have been the O Som Do Jazz rhythm section for over a dozen years.
They have the powerhouse trio called La Lucha that is very popular in Florida. Bruno Miranda (piano) is from São Paulo and is a Berklee graduate. Percussionist Rafael Pereira is also a Brazilian and has performed and toured with Janelle Monáe and others. Guitarist is Tabajara Belo from Minas Gerais in Brazil. He was completing his doctorate at the University of Florida and was able to join the group for several concerts and this recording. The flute and saxophone work is from José Valentino Ruiz, a Latin GRAMMY recipient who heads the music business program at the University of Florida. Aberto was recorded at the MIRA studio at St. Petersburg College where David Manson teaches. Manson's original music has been placed on HBO, ABC, Showtime, BBC One, AMC and CW networks.
