Do You Have an Appetite for Jazz?

Good food and fine service make every diner happy. When you add in music, diners are even happier, says Sylvie Galiazzi.

The owner of Les Crepes discovered that as soon as she introduced a jazz brunch at her French bistro in Collingswood when it opened in March.

“Live entertainment is good for the body and the soul," says the French-born restaurateur. “When you eat good food and listen to lovely music, you become a happy person."

Jazz brunches have drawn a loyal and ever expanding clientele to Les Crepes Sunday mornings. Jazz combos like Standard Deviation and the guitar-vocal duo of Kevin Sullivan and Shannon McGill have appeared regularly. The jazz ensemble She Hates Me has proved almost as popular as Galiazzi's signature crepes and Salade Nicoise.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art has found a winning combination in a champagne jazz brunch that adds a live jazz duo to a menu offering eggs Benedict, breakfast pastries and an artist's table with a selection of salads, roasted vegetables, smoked salmon and an international selection of cheeses.

Jazz and fine food form the perfect prelude to a visit to the museum's ongoing exhibition of Japanese artists Ike Taiga and Tokuyama Gyokuran.

“Jazz brunch is a good fit for Philadelphia," says Kevin Mayberry, the owner of Ortlieb's Jazzhaus. “The city has a big pool of jazz musicians and there's a market out there for jazz in a relaxed setting."
