In 2004, Peter F. Gontha exclaimed, “If we want to create a jazz festival, let's go all the way; let's make it big, the biggest in the world if possible!" He wasn't joking. On 4, 5 and 6 March 2005, Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival was established. There were 11 stages and 146 performances from Indonesian and international musicians alike.

Jeff Lorber, Deodato, George Duke, Angie Stone, Incognito, Michael Paulo, Steve Thornton, Jeff Kashiwa, Tania Maria, Laura Fygi, Vinny Valentino, Gilles Peterson, Brian Simpson, Eric Benet, Tetsuo Sakurai, Amp Fiddler and Godfather of Soul James Brown, were the performers who resonated the festival's presence in 2005.

Taking in the journey of jazz itself, its formation (an amalgamation derived from various musical cultures), its evolution to become up to date, although some musicians continue to remain loyal to conventional jazz, this jazz festival (bound to be the largest in the Southern hemisphere) aims to spread messages of peace and harmony through the language of jazz.

The theme “Bringing the World to Indonesia" indicates the festival's capability to unite musicians, music lovers and draw the attention of the world to Indonesia in order to actualize peace and harmony.
