Verneri Pohjola Quartet: Ancient History

Al di là di una versione essenziale, minimalista di "Hyperballad" - brano firmato Bjork e diventato da qualche tempo una sorta di "Time After Time" del nuovo millennio - si può dire che l'intero Ancient History sia costruito intorno alla forma ballad. Declinata nelle sue varie configurazioni, affrontata da diversi punti angolari e da differenti prospettive ma sempre ballad.

Come l'iniziale "Deism," una lunga cavalcata innodica, carica di spiritualità che accumula solennità passo dopo passo. O la title-track, languida e sonnolenta ma con accecanti lampi della tromba del leader ad esprimere tutta la sua magia timbrica. Per chiudere con "Ballad 18" materia sonora impalpabile ed evanescente, soffi e vibrazioni che evidenziano il vuoto più del pieno, dove l'assenza è la vera protagonista.

Ma in Ancient History c'è spazio anche per gradite anomalie, su tutte "Cheap Taxi Adventure," composizione frizzante e spericolata alla quale il Fender Rhodes di Aki Rissanen ed il sax contralto di Jukka Perko imprimono una decisa accelerata all'andamento lento caratterizzante l'incisione. Così come interessanti risultano "Thunderous Thoughts," gran ribollire ritmico e libertà armonica, e "But This One Goes in Four", tempi dispari e profumi mediorientali a riempire le narici.

Ancient History è complessivamente disco assai godibile che mette in mostra un trombettista talentuoso e un compositore promettente.
