trumpetAlbum Description
In 2019 we were awarded a residency at Bundanon in the southern Highlands NSW and invited vocal artist Sonya Holowell and sound engineer Ross A’hern to join us. We were not sure what we would be able to achieve as we had no idea of the room we had to work with, the acoustics and isolation if any. Our plan was to be prepared for anything so Ross packed his recording rig (surround array and all) into his van and we set off to Bundanon with three full cars and an open mind as to what we could achieve. On arriving we were happy to find a very good dance / workshop space with wooden floors and reasonable height and width. We set up and once Ross was ready it was time to a do test so we were ready to record first thing the next day. Ed Goyer, needed to visit his family who were about 40min away from Bundanon so Ed Rodrigues, Sonya and I improvised a short piece at dusk with the studio bifold doors open and a stereo pair of microphones pointed out to nature. This piece appears on this album titled ‘Dusk.’ This was the first time we had played with Sonya. In the lead up to the residency we decided not to rehearse with Sonya and only provided her with some recordings of previous releases. It was you might say trial by fire but having myself performed with Sonya in the Sydney Improvisers Composer Kollectiv Orchestra, I knew she would bring magic to this project. Content with our test recording we retreated to our accomodation to prepare for recording the next day. Across the next three days we pressed record and improvised. This album and its twin album ‘This God is Empty’ contain over 2hrs of our Bundanon explorations. The title of our works are instinctive reactions to the improvisation decided immediately after the take. They are not thematic narratives for the improv. We would like to thank Sonya and Ross for their amazing work and commitment to the project and Bundanon for providing the space and focus to enable this project to happen. Enjoy Polymorphic Orkestra
