Divine Song is the first of two record dates Sangeeta did for producer Bruce Calabrese’s New Pulse Artist Records (later Beat City). It was recorded in 1979 at RBY recording Studio by Jack Jones, mixed at Sound Heights Studio in July and October 1979 and released on vinyl in 1980. Sangeeta’s association with Roswell Rudd and Archie Shepp extended back to the previous decade in NYC. In 1971 Sangeeta was a member of Roswell Rudd's group and was featured as soloist playing Roswell's music with the Jazz Composer's Orchestra. Sangeeta co-led a band with saxophonist Marzette Watts at the East Village Inn in a series of weekend concerts that also featured Archie Shepp, Sun Ra’s Arkestra and others. Divine Song and Music Is Love are two of the earliest available recordings available of Sangeeta’s work and although he recorded extensively at his NYC loft and in a number of notable live concerts the next studio recordings would be the 1996 Earthship and Calling Coltrane cds released in 2008 and 2012 respectively on Sunjump; Art Spirit, duets with reed & flute player Joe Giardullo recorded in December 1997, released by Boxholder Music in 2003. And Sangeeta Michael Berardi: The Mr P Sessions recorded in 2011 and released in 2013 on Sunjump. Footage from this record date appears in Burrill Crohn’s documentary film on Sangeeta Playing With Parkinson’s.
