Kenny Wheeler: Six for Six
L'ultimo lavoro del grande musicista anglo-canadese Kenny Wheeler pubblicato dalla Cam Jazz in realtà non è il più recente, essendo stato registrato nel 2008. Ben prima dunque di The Long Waiting, realizzato qualche anno dopo con l'ausilio di una big band, con il quale condivide molti dei temi e dei musicisti impiegati. Il sestetto impiegato è abbastanza inconsueto per Wheeler, più avvezzo a suonare in quartetto o quintetto, in quanto i pochi album realizzati con questo formato, come Around 6 del 1979 per la ECM, utilizzavano una diversa strumentazione.

I musicisti presenti al suo fianco in questa occasione sono suoi compagni di vecchia data (con l'eccezione del batterista Martin France, militante nel trio del pianista John Taylor), a cominciare dal meno noto, il sassofonista Bobby Wellins, con il quale aveva condiviso la frontline del quintetto di Buddy Featherstonhaugh tra il 1956 e il 1957 e una breve militanza comune nell'orchestra di Johnny Dankworth nei primi anni '60. Wellins è l'unico dei musicisti a non comparire anche in The Long Waiting, che mantiene oltre alla sezione ritmica (completata dal pianista John Taylor e dal contrabbassista Chris Laurence) anche il sassofonista Stan Sulzman.

Come si è detto, molti dei temi incisi nel corso di questa session sarebbero poi stati ripresi in un arrangiamento per big band sull'album citato; ed è interessante confrontare le due versioni per rendersi conto della facilità e naturalezza con cui Wheeler sa adattare la sua scrittura agli organici che ha a disposizione. Elementi comuni rimangono l'ariosità e il lirismo dei temi, la leggerezza della ritmica, l'integrazione tra parti scritte e improvvisate dai solisti; nella versione orchestrale si aggiunge il sostegno armonico dato dalla strumentazione aggiunta, che sottolinea i passaggi più salienti delle composizioni mantenendo inalterata la linearità dello sviluppo melodico cui partecipa direttamente.

Questo CD rappresenta pertanto un complemento ideale al lavoro successivo, e come quello merita le più calde raccomandazioni, anche se per chi già conosce e apprezza l'operato del flicornista le stesse risulteranno ampiamente superflue.
