Brooklyn Jazz Underground: Seven by Seven
Settetto molto compatto, solido, il Brooklyn Jazz Underground pratica un jazz non particolarmente avventuroso ma comunque ben congegnato e condotto, col ruolo-guida che passa dalla voce (persino iperpresente nella prima parte dell'album) alla tromba, al sax tenore. Ci sono delle ripetizioni e un asservimento al canto a volte persino eccessivo, quasi supino, tuttavia il lavoro prende corpo via via, e la sua notevole coesione, la coerenza intestina pur con qualche carenza di dinamiche, di dialettica tra i ruoli, finisce per avere la meglio nell'immagine globale che l'album lascia di sé.

Nel corpus dei quattordici brani complessivi, tutti originali e più o meno equamente divisi tra i vari membri del gruppo, si alternano veloci siparietti ed episodi più corposi, fino ai dieci minuti abbondanti di "Cowboys and Indians" (di Owen Howard). Dal mazzetto dei primi estrarremmo l'iniziale "Burned Out" (sempre di Howard) e il conclusivo "This Is Why" (Adam Kolker), in duo piano/clarone, fra i secondi "Along the Lines" (Anne Mette Iversen), "Fort Piece" (David Cook), in bel crescendo, e la seconda parte del già citato "Cowboys and Indians."
