Last month AllAboutJazz-New York celebrated its 4th anniversary (we started back in May 2002). It seemed an odd number to make a big deal about so we let it pass. But we didn't have to hold back our festive spirit for long. June 2006 is our 50th issue and that is substantial enough to warrant mention. Just a quick expression of thanks to everyone who supported and helped us get to this point. Maybe not so coincidentally, AAJ-NY has been nominated for its first award this month, “Best Periodical Covering Jazz" in the annual Jazz Journalist Association Awards. We are up against such legendary magazines as Downbeat so to even be nominated is an honor. Again, thanks to those who have made it possible.

Another reason to celebrate is the kickoff to the festival season. This issue highlights both the JVC Jazz Festival with our Cover story on saxophonist Charles Lloyd and the Vision Festival with our Interview (trombonist Paul Rutherford) and Artist Feature (drummer Hamid Drake). Both festivals have solid lineups so check out the calendar of events for more information as well as our CD reviews where some performers are included. Another Vision-related piece of coverage is our spotlight on the avant jazz label AUM Fidelity. And for local flavor, peruse our Club Profile on Showmans up in Harlem.

Of course everyone is aware of the tragic events in New Orleans. We are happy to report that while the city may still be far from okay, at least the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival happened, bringing some small semblance of normalcy. Take a look at our Festival Report from the Crescent City.

So traditionally for a fourth anniversary, fruit is given. Since we didn't mention the occasion and you cannot mail foodstuffs, the one gift we ask of you, our readers, is that you continue to support jazz, both recorded and live, both in New York and out. If that happens, our next 50 issues will be as fruitful as our first.

See you at the shows...

Laurence Donohue-Greene & Andrey Henkin
