Tarik Shah was arrested on May 28, 2005 and is currently being held in prison while he awaits trial on charges of “conspiracy to assist terrorists.” Prosecutors said Shah was caught expressing eagerness to help terrorists" in secretly taped conversations with an undercover FBI agent posing as an al-Qaida recruiter". If convicted, Mr. Shah faces up to 15 years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000. Shah’s attorney, Anthony Ricco, suggests the arrests were an attempt by the government to bolster public perception that it is aggressively pursuing terrorists.
He's a wonderful musician and a wonderful person," said friend and jazz saxophonist Salim Washington, 47, noting Shah has recorded albums with Abbey Lincoln and Betty Carter. He is not in any way tied with things that have been alleged."
Jazz musicians throughout the greater New York metropolitan area and Boston will perform on at the November 13th benefit concert. Donations in any amount will be accepted.
