Artists to Donate Fees, Kimmel Center Employees Contribute, Free Concert Tickets Given to Evacuees

September 15-17

The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts today announced efforts to aid the victims and evacuees of hurricane Katrina. “Every performance during the opening weekend of our 2005-06 Kimmel Center Presents series will have some element or component designed to aid the victims of this devastating national disaster in partnership with the Red Cross and Philadelphia’s Project Brotherly Love. The expressions of support and outpouring of generosity by the weekends’ performers and the Kimmel Center’s staff across the board was such that we felt the best way to draw support from the community was to concentrate all our efforts on the weekends’ concerts,” said Kimmel Center President and CEO Janice Price.

The wide-ranging efforts, led by Kimmel Center’s Vice President of Programming and Education Mervon Mehta, include:

  • Artists performing on the opening weekend at the Kimmel Center will be participating in some way, including donating a portion, or in some cases their entire performing fees. Artists performing opening weekend concerts include The Roots, Shawn Hewitt, TV on the Radio, Deerhoof, Solomon Burke, and the MFSB Band.

  • Tony Bennett will make an appeal from the stage during his performance on September 15, and will autograph cd’s to be sold at a Silent Auction at the Kimmel Center that weekend.

  • Free tickets to the Solomon Burke and MFSB performance on Saturday, September 17 will be given to evacuees and their families.

  • The Red Cross and Philadelphia’s Project Brotherly Love will be in attendance for the entire weekend to assist concertgoers with information on how they can help and to collect donations.

  • The employees of the Kimmel Center have also undertaken a collection to be distributed to the Red Cross and Project Brotherly Love.

  • Kimmel Center will donate a portion of the proceeds from the weekend’s concerts to the Red Cross and Project Brotherly Love.

  • Cadence Restaurant and Lounge will donate a portion of the proceeds from sales during opening weekend.

“For the past two weeks we watched with horror as the region around Louisiana and Mississippi suffered from the devastating effects of hurricane Katrina. We feel a deep responsibility to the countless musicians from New Orleans that have and will continue to grace our stages and who represent the musical heritage of our country,” said Mehta. “We want to do what we can to ease the burden of the people of the region and keep the roots and tradition of American music alive.”

Opening Weekend performances at the Kimmel Center include An Evening With Tony Bennett on Thursday, September 15; The Roots & Friends on Friday, September 16; and Solomon Burke with special guest MFSB Band on Saturday, September 17, all in Verizon Hall.

Tickets for these performances can be purchased by calling 215-893-1999 or online at www.kimmelcenter.org, or at the Kimmel Center box office, open daily from 10 am to 6 pm and later on performance evenings. (Additional fees may apply). For group sales call 215-790-5883.
