Bill Shoemaker's Point of Departure Launches September 1st www.pointofdeparture.org
Bill Shoemaker has been a forceful advocate for jazz and other forms of uncompromising music for almost 30 years, contributing to most of the major jazz periodicals in North America and Europe, and writing liner notes for many important recordings.
Shoemaker now goes solo with Point of Departure: an online music journal, which launches September 1st at: http//www.pointofdeparture.org
Each issue of the magazine-format site will contain a number of features including interviews, reviews and essays.
Issue 1 features interviews with South African drummer Louis Moholo-Moholo and iconoclastic pianist Keith Jarrett. Bassist Michael Formanek answers 20 questions about life on the road in Travellin' Light. Moment's Notice contains 20 short reviews of CDs by artists ranging from Dexter Gordon to Sunny Murray. The Circle with a Hole in the Middle takes a look back at vintage vinyl that has yet to surface on CD: Issue 1 revisits a Sam Rivers rarity. And, The Uh Uh Uhs (the name is taken from a Steve Lacy tune) features commentaries on current music criticism.
If that's not enough, Free Jazz offers readers the chance to win real prizes. Courtesy of Delmark Records, readers of Issue 1will have the opportunity to win one of three copies of the DVD version of Live At The River East Art Center by Kahil El'Zabar's Ritual Trio featuring Billy Bang.
