Christian McBride has, over the course of the past two decades, emerged as one of jazz's leading bassists, equally comfortable in the fusion territory of his recent tour with Chick Corea and John McLaughlin's Five Peace Band as he is a more straight-ahead session, like his own new release, Kind of Brown (Mack Avenue,. 2009).

He's been the bassist of choice for a remarkable range of artists, from Dave Brucbeck and Freddie Hubbard to Pat Metheny, Diana Krall and George Duke. Whether it's bowing an acoustic bass or thumb-slapping an electric, bringing the funk or swinging hard, he's a versatile player who manages to remain distinctive and personal, regardless of the setting.

AAJ contributor Esther Berlenga-Ryan, in a recent marathon interview with McBride, touched on everything from his formative years to the recording of Kind of Brown. The bassist also discloses, for the first time, an enlightening and revealing matter of choice in an AAJ exclusive which, along with the rest of the interview, provides the most extensive and detailed look ever at a bassist who, still on the shy side of forty, is giving back some of what was given to him when he was coming up in Philadelphia.
