In Newport, RI, August 7 - 9, 2009 and CAREFUSION NEW YORK JAZZ FESTIVAL in New York City, June 2010

New Names for Jazz Festivals at Historic Sites

NEW YORK, NY, David Schlotterbeck, CEO of CareFusion, announced today that the corporation will be the title sponsor for George Wein's Jazz Festival 55 in Newport, RI. In addition, CareFusion will sponsor a festival to be produced by Mr. Wein in New York City in June 2010. These commitments by CareFusion, a global provider of product and services that measurably improve the productivity and safety of health care, are part of a worldwide program to associate the corporation with jazz festivals in Newport, Chicago, Monterey, Manly (Australia), Paris and New York.

“The magic is still with us," Wein said today. “Over the decades, sponsors have always found us, as is the case with CareFusion. We were going forward in producing the jazz festival in Newport without a sponsor; but when we got the call from CareFusion, this guaranteed that our work of 55 years in Newport would continue. New Yorkers and jazz fans around the world will be pleased to know that CareFusion will make it possible for jazz to once again take over the city in June. We are looking forward to creating an exciting and innovative 2010 CareFusion New York Jazz Festival to add to the important New York cultural scene."

The CareFusion Jazz Festival Series includes:

  • George Wein's CareFusion Jazz Festival 55, August 7 - 9, 2009
  • CareFusion Chicago Jazz Festival, September 4 - 6, 2009
  • CareFusion Presents Dizzy's Den at the Monterey Jazz Festival, September 18 - 20, 2009
  • CareFusion Manly Jazz Festival (Australia), October 3 - 5, 2009

About George Wein

Jazz Impresario and NEA Jazz Master George Wein is considered to be as much a legend as his festivals. Through his company, Festival Productions, he has spearheaded hundreds of music events annually since 1954 when he produced the first Newport Jazz Festival - an event that started the “festival era," according to jazz critic Leonard Feather. At 83, Wein has as much creative fuel as he did when he started that festival and advanced the concept of live music. He pioneered the concept of sponsor association with music events and continues that tradition with CareFusion. Honors and awards have been bestowed upon him by AARP, Studio Museum of Harlem, Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter, the Government of France and other organizations around the world. Wein's autobiography, Myself Among Others: A Life in Music, which chronicles his life in jazz, was recognized by the Jazz Journalists Association as 2004's best book about jazz and 2009's Events Producer of the Year. In addition to his life in jazz, Wein has a long history of involvement with philanthropy and the arts.
