Creative Differences Baltimore - Fall 2008

The award winning concert series CREATIVE DIFFERENCES returns with its Fall season next week. The series opens with two exclusive US performances by the tenor sax giant David Murray.

WED 1 OCTOBER
DAVID MURRAY BLACK SAINT QUARTET

David Murray - tenor saxophone & bass clarinet
Lafayette Gilchrist - piano

This is an exclusive appearance by this powerhouse group. The concert will sell out..advance reservations advised! David Murray, tenor saxophone and bass clarinet player: has recorded over 130 albums between 1975 and 2008. His latest album, Sacred Ground, features Cassandra Wilson and the Black Saint Quartet, and harks back to the landmark recordings made by the artist for the seminal Jazz label in the 80's.

JUDI SILVANO ENSEMBLE

A sublime all star collective! .An alchemist of music and movement, Silvano's career as a choreographer and dancer led her straight to NYC's downtown music scene where her improvisational spirit could run free. It also steered her toward what would become a long-term collaboration with saxophonist Joe Lovano that began in 1980 and continues to this day.

WAYNE HORVITZ & SWEETER THAN THE DAY

This Seattle based group features Wayne Horvitz, one of the heroes of the original NY downtown scene. His compositions are deeply beautiful,melodic and highly original. a great showcase for Horvitz's beautiful compositions, his really strange, angular chord progressions. -- NPR's Weekend Edition

STEVE LEHMAN

Music for solo saxophone and live electronics
Named a Rising Star on the alto saxophone in 2006, 2007, and 2008 by the Downbeat Magazine International Critics Poll, Lehman is a saxophonist and composer whose work resides on the frontiers of contemporary music. He has been recognized as one of today's truly original creative voices..

John Hammond - guitar,harmonica,vocals
From coffeehouses to concert halls, festivals and beyond, John Hammond has spent forty years entertaining blues, folk and rock audiences around the world, performing intense solo-acoustic blues. A Grammy Award winner and four time nominee, Hammond is also a multiple W.C. Handy award winner who has shared the stage and/or recorded with many of the masters, including Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker and Howlin' Wolf. Trio BraamDeJoodeVatcher comprises three of the Dutch jazz scenes most idiosyncratic musicians, for whom freedom and adventure are essential values. They all play an absolutely equal role in the music, which can go in any which way, depending on decisions made on the spot. The long musical friendship (since 1989) results in intuitive playing of the highest order.

The Jamie Baum Septet performs original jazz compositions and arrangements . The Septet was formed in 1999 and has had mostly the same band members since its inception.
While known as a seasoned jazz player, Baum's experiences with classical music and graduate work in composition has led her to look at ways in which those practices could expand the traditional jazz format.

BILLY BANG QUARTET

The violin is hardly the first instrument that comes to mind when you think about jazz, but that's never daunted Billy Bang, one of the instrument's most adventurous exponents. Over the past 26 years Bang's hard-edged tone, soulful sense of traditional swing and evcatively expressive style has wowed critics and music lovers world wide.
