NEW JAZZ RELEASES

OMER AVITALAVISHAI COHENDANIEL FREEDMANYONATAN AVISHAI
Third World Love Songs (Fresh Sound World Jazz - FSWJ023)
Featuring: Avishai E. Cohen (tp), Yonatan Avishai (p, fl), Omer Avital (b), Daniel Freedman (d)
This magnificent recording is the fruit of a unique grouping of some of the world's most promising jazz talent. Here we have six pieces recorded earlier this year, while on tour in Spain, by trumpet player Avishai E. Cohen (who will be shortly releasing his own Fresh Sound New Talent recording as leader), young pianist Yonatan Avishai, flamboyant bass player Omer Avital (also a member of the OAM Trio, with drummer Marc Miralta and pianist Aaron Goldberg, with two Fresh Sound new Talent CDs under their belts) and New York drummer Daniel Freedman. “The music they play with their own groups could never leave you indifferent, as what predominate in their music are originality, and above all, a very characteristic display of expression." from the liner notes by producer Jordi Pujol.

ELVIND OPSVIK
Overseas (Fresh Sound New talent - FSNT146)
Featuring: Eivind Opsvik (b), Tony Malaby (ts), Loren Stillman (as), Jason Rigby (ss,bcl), Jacob Sacks (p), Craig Taborn (hammond C3 org), Wells Hanley (fender rh), Gerald Cleaver (d), Jeff Davies (d), Dan Weiss (perc).
Norwegian bassist Eivind Opsvik, has caused a real storm in the New York jazz scene during the past months, and is now set to do the same in the rest of the world with the release of “Overseas", his debut CD as leader and first appearance on the Fresh Sound New Talent imprint.

MICHAEL KANAN TRIO
The Gentleman Is A Dope (Fresh Sound New talent - FSNT147)
Featuring: Michael Kanan (p) with Ben Street (b) and Tim Pleasant (d)
This is the second recording by the Michael Kanan trio, featuring Kanan on piano, Ben Street on bass, and Tim Pleasant on drums. Kanan has been playing with Street and Pleasant individually in various situations for ten years. As a trio, the group has played together since 1998. Their sound is that of a classic bebop trio, with plenty of interaction and plenty of space. Kanan has been strongly influenced by the music of pianist Lennie Tristano and his students, whose ideas and sound permeate Kanan's own trio, along with other influences including Thelonious Monk, Ahmad Jamal, and Hank Jones.

CHRIS LIGHTCAP QUARTET
Bigmouth (Fresh Sound New talent - FSNT148)
Featuring: Chris Lightcap (b), Gerald Cleaver (d), Tony Malaby (ts), Bill McHenry (ts)
With “Bigmouth" (FSNT 148), Chris Lightcap really consolidates himself as a versatile and inspired leader. He brings together a group of regular collaborators who only go to add further colour to Chris' already rich compositions. Here we are presented with seven original numbers and one cover version, of the Lennon / McCartney tune, “Dig A Pony", which is given a really personal makeover from Lightcap's nimble bass playing. Featured on the album is New York saxophonist Bill McHenry (a Fresh Sound New Talent regular and regular collaborator with many artists, like Rebecca Martin), Tony Malaby, also on tenor, and fiery improvdrummer Gerald Clever (also a Fresh Sound New Talent leader, with his critically acclaimed “Veil of Names"). This a young and thoughtful album that offers a twist on the usual quartet sound.

CESC MIRALTA QUARTET
Carretera austral (Fresh Sound New talent - FSNT149)
Featuring: Cesc Miralta (saxes), Albert Sanz (p), Chris Higgins (b), Marc Miralta (d)
Catalonian saxophone player Cesc Miralta is back, with his second leader recording for the Fresh Sound New Talent label. Following on from “Sol de Nit", and its unusual interplay and warm tones, comes “Carretera Austral", a unique vision of the world that surrounds him and nature. He is joined on this CD by his brother, the critically acclaimed drummer Marc Miralta, North American bass player Chris Higgins and also pianist Albert Sanz.

HERMAN MERLO QUINTET
Consin (Fresh Sound New talent - FSNT150)
Featuring: Carlos Lastra (ss, as), Rodrigo Dom
