It's a sorry world when war affects so many of our concerns, even on the home front, oceans away from conflict. But there are war stories to tell, even as part of Jazz Appreciation Month. Inspired by Ken Burns' recent PBS documentary series The War," war-related music should highlight a month-long series of events being held at various locations in April.
World War II was a time when popular music carried sentiments that bolstered the war effort.
Although President Bush's actions regarding the Iraq war have divided the nation, there should be little dispute over the public law he signed in April 2003 that endorsed jazz and declared that April would be recognized annually as Jazz Appreciation Month.
The Madison Jazz Society will sponsor the local activities, which are intended to draw public attention to the extraordinary history and heritage of jazz, to stimulate the current jazz scene and to encourage people of all ages to participate in jazz through studying the music, attending concerts, listening to jazz on radio and recordings, reading books about jazz and supporting institutional jazz programs.
Madison area libraries will also offer displays of jazz books, CDs and other information.
