Italian Jazz Critics Poll Results

Dear friends, we are pleased to give you the results of “Top Jazz 2006", the 24th poll yearly held since 1982 by our magazine “Musica Jazz" with a very qualified jury of over sixty Italian critics. We hope it may be of good interest for you and for your readers, particularly in the part concerning Italian jazz. Here Stefano Bollani scored a double victory, exactly like Ornette Coleman in the International field. Here are the first three places in each of the nine standings:

ITALIAN JAZZ:

Record of the year: 1. Piano Solo, Stefano Bollani (ECM); 2. Live Conversations, Dado Moroni & Enrico Pieranunzi (Abeat); 3. Stolen Days, Francesco Bearzatti Sax Pistols (Auand).

Musician of the year: 1. Stefano Bollani, piano; 2, Gianluca Petrella, trombone; 3. Franco D'Andrea, piano.

Band of the year: 1. Orchestra Egea; 2. Lydian Sound Orchestra; 3. Franco D'Andrea Quartet.

Best new talent: 1. Giancarlo Tossani, piano; 2. Cristina Zavalloni, vocalist; 3. Zeno De Rossi, drums.

INTERNATIONAL JAZZ:

Record of the year (new): 1. Sound Grammar, Ornette Coleman Quartet (Sound Grammar); 2. Time Lines, Andrew Hill (Blue Note); 3. It's Mostly Residual, Cuong Vu (Auand).

Record of the year (reissue): 1. The Complete Lester Young Studio Sessions On Verve, Lester Young (Verve) and Spirits Rejoice!, Louis Moholo Octet (Ogun); 3. New Grass, Albert Ayler (Impulse!/Verve).

Musician of the year: 1. Ornette Coleman; 2. Andrew Hill; 3. Wayne Shorter.

Band of the year: 1. Wayne Shorter Quartet; 2. Ornette Coleman Quartet; 3. Alex Schlippenbach Monk's Casino.

Best new talent: 1. Cuong Vu; 2. Arve Henriksen; 3. Ben Allison.

In its January issue, now on sale, “Musica Jazz" magazine is publishing all the jazz experts' answers to our questions (three for each of those nine sections, for a total of nearly 2.000). Moreover, with the magazine our readers will find an unissued CD, especially compiled with tracks by the winners.
