John Coltrane "Sheets of Sound" Summit at New York City's Manhattan School of Music

A four-day John Coltrane celebration, “Sheets of Sound: The John Coltrane Summit" begins today, Monday, November 6 and continues through Thursday, November 9, at New York's Manhattan School of Music. This four-day event offers concerts, panel discussions, and open rehearsals covering John Coltrane, his legacy, and his music. A concert highlight takes place on Thursday night when the Manhattan School of Music Jazz Orchestra, conducted by Justin DiCioccio, joined by saxophonist Dave Liebman, perform the world premiere of Gunnar Mossblad's arrangement for jazz orchestra of the Meditations suite.

John Coltrane Summit schedule of events:

Monday, November 6, 7:30pm: opening session with DAVE LIEBMAN, played will be examples from Coltrane's repertoire beginning with the apprenticeship with Dizzy Gillespie and Johnny Hodges, through the Miles Davis period, followed by the Classic Quartet, and ending with the 'free' jazz period

Tuesday, November 7, 7:30pm: panel discussion moderated by IRA GITLER, who coined the phrase 'sheets of sound' with RASHIED ALI, ROY HAYNES, JIMMY HEATH, and DAVE LIEBMAN Wednesday, November 8, 7:30 pm: Manhattan School of Music John Coltrane Student Ensemble; PHIL MARKOWITZ, director; DAVE LIEBMAN, saxophone Dahoney Dance, Blues Minor, Impressions, Creation, Untitled Original, India

Thursday, November 9, 7:30 pm: Manhattan School of Music Jazz Orchestra; JUSTIN DICIOCCIO, conductor; DAVE LIEBMAN, saxophone World premiere of Gunnar Mossblad's arr. of Meditations suite Take the Coltrane, Naima, Big Nick, After the Rain, Lonnie's Lament, Joy/Selflessness

Open rehearsals take place on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, from 3 to 5 pm.
