The 14 Jazz Orchestra: Nothing Hard Is Ever Easy
Quest'orchestra opera in Florida ed è formata da 13 insegnanti o ex alunni della Miami University diretti dall'arrangiatore Dan Bonsanti e integrati da pregevoli ospiti: Will Lee e Mark Egan al basso elettrico e il batterista Marko Marcinko. Nothing Hard Is Ever Easy è il loro disco di debutto.
Dan Bonsanti ha preso parte come sassofonista e scritto le partiture per la big band di Jaco Pastorius del 1981. Qui tutti gli arrangiamenti sono suoi, eccetto il brano iniziale, che riprende una bella partitura di Clare Fischer sul tema di Billy Strayhorn "U.M.M.G." Lo stile orchestrale è prettamente modern mainstream venato di coloriture fusion: piena aderenza stilistica dunque ma impeccabile professionalità nel presentare un repertorio composito, che spazia da Wayne Shorter a Lennon-McCartney, da Joe Henderson a Curtis Mayfield, da Charlie Parker a Jaco Pastorius.
Assieme alle coordinate stilistiche di fondo l' elemento unificante è dato dal vibrante sassofonista d' origine venezuelana Ed Calle, che è il solista principale.
Il percorso musicale predilige brani ritmicamente dinamici e swinganti, in partiture agili e ricche di colore. Tra i momenti migliori ricordiamo la fantasiosa riscritture del parkeriano "Donna Lee," il flessuoso "Pools" di Don Grolnick mentre il beatlesiano "With a Little Help from My Friends" spicca per l'apporto ritmico di Will Lee sul focoso intervento di Calle.
