Free pre-concert talk with special guest, bassist John Patitucci

Westchester, NY -- The Westchester Jazz Orchestra has been called a local orchestra in about the same way as, say, the New York or Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras are local. On Sat., Jan. 31, this world-class big band will perform the music of pianist Chick Corea and saxophonist Wayne Shorter at 8 PM at the Irvington Town Hall Theater, 85 Main Street, Irvington, NY. World-renowned bassist and composer John Patitucci will be WJOs special guest and WBGO's Gary Walker is set to host the concert. Reserved seating is $35/$30 for seniors/ $5 for students and subscription discounts are available. westjazzorch.org. Box office: 914-591-6602. WJO: 914-861-9100. Concert snow date is Sunday, February 1 at 2 PM.

WJO, described by critics as setting a standard in big band modern jazz, hugely impressive and exceptional, received national recognition last year with the release of its debut CD, All In. The CD was named on multiple Best CDs of 2007 lists, was a WBGO Top Pick from December 2007 through April 2008, and reached #4 in nationwide radio airplay.

WJOs special guest, John Patitucci, is a long-time sideman with both Corea and Shorter. He has won two Grammy awards, been nominated for close to 20, and regularly places as Best Bassist in reader polls. He has toured worldwide both as a leader and as a sideman for scores of legendary musicians including Herbie Hancock, Stan Getz, Wynton Marsalis, Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, Sting, Aaron Neville, Natalie Cole, Milton Nascimiento and Astrud Gilberto. John resides in Hastings and is a member of WJOs advisory board.

Before the concert, Patitucci and WJOs Artistic Director Mike Holober will host a discussion highlighting the evenings program and talking about jazz in general. We held a chat before our last concert and it was so well attended and appreciated that we decided to have another, explains Holober. The talk is free for ticket-holders and will begin at 7:15. (Snow date talk begins at 1:15 on Feb 1.)

I am really looking forward to working with Mike Holober and WJO, says Patitucci. It is a rare treat to play with a fantastic band like this in my own backyard. I am also excited to take part in premiering new arrangements of tunes by Wayne and Chick, two of my favorite composers of the 20th Century.

WJO will perform two additional season concerts during 2008-09, Jazz Goes to the Movies on April 18, and Americana on June 6. In addition, small groups from WJO will perform at the White Plains Library on February 15 and appear at the Jacob Burns Film Center as part of their Jazz on Film series on April 16.

WJOs concerts are partially funded by the New York State Council on the Arts, the Westchester Arts Council and the Aaron Copland Fund for Music.

Reserved seating tickets are $35 for adults, $30 for seniors and only $5 for students. Subscription discounts are available. Order online or by telephone at the Irvington Theater box office at 914-591-6602. WJO: 914-861-9100.
