New York, NY - Arts for Art is proud to present the third installment of a four month run of Vision Dance Music Series events. The Vision Dance Music Series is devoted to dance music collaborations involving improvising dancers working with musicians of the Jazz avant-garde. The week of performances in February is titled DrummingDance & SoundingStrings. Each month from December through March, Arts for Art is presenting a week of unique collaborative performances of cutting-edge dancers and choreographers with some of downtown's most explosive avantJazz improvisers. These types of collaborations have been frequent since the loft era of the 1970s.

The February performances have migrated uptown, to the great Symphony Space. This week features two piano stars Matthew Shipp and Dave Burrell. Both are mainstays of the northeast avantJazz scene; Shipp based in New York and Burrell in Philadelphia. Best known for his role in David S. Ware's quartet, Matthew Shipp is a fiery, yet sensitive pianist with an incredible ear for collaboration. This week, Shipp will perform twice in duo - on Wednesday with saxophonist Daniel Carter and on Friday with bassist William Parker. Dave Burrell has been pursuing improvised music for more than 40 years and his impressive resume includes stints with Archie Shepp, Pharaoh Sanders, David Murray and many others. This week he will play in duo with young drummer Guillermo E. Brown, who has quickly cemented himself as a multifarious heavyweight in the New York scene. In addition to the duet with Brown, Burrell will also be a part of Patricia Nicholson's new piece, On Their Shoulders, We're Still Dancing, based on the music of Duke Ellington and Jelly Roll Morton In addition to the music, there will also be two very special performances from Carmen de Lavallade, the incredible dancer whose career has spanned more the fifty years and who has worked with such artistic luminaries as Alvin Ailey, Duke Ellington, Harry Belafonte, Bill T. Jones and many others. She performs at the festival with New York bassist Todd Nicholson. Other dance highlights include a piece by choreographer Wendy Osserman collaborating with violinist Rosi Hertlein.

All the performances will include free improvisations along with more structured choreography, and the broad range of approaches will reflect the equally broad range of backgrounds among the participants. “Vision Art" or avantJazz is not limited by any particular tradition but may in any instance utilize any tradition. It is art built on the development of craft, with each artist using a voice that is uniquely his/her own. It is art with a most decidedly disciplined disregard for tradition and boundaries.
