Victor Goines, noted clarinetist and saxophonist, will be featured in an evening jazz meditation on Sunday, May 7 at 6:00 PM. Poetry is by Tony Hoagland. No admission charge.

Celebrating the musical soul of New Orleans, native son Victor Goines leads an ensemble playing the best of Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet, Louis Armstrong, and other early jazz pioneers. The event marks the end of the fifth season of All Souls at Sundown, a unique monthly series blending jazz, poetry, and meditation. In honor of the fifth season and of the contributions of New Orleans musicians, this program will conclude with a second line and New Orleans jambalaya and red velvet cake by John “Sweet Daddy" Longo, Jr.

Proceeds from the evening will benefit the New Orleans Musicians Clinic, whose mission it is to sustain Louisiana's musicians in mind, body and spirit by developing access to primary care and preventative health services and by addressing the health care needs of the musicians and their families.

Mp>Victor Goines was born and raised in New Orleans. He received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Loyola University (New Orleans), and his Master of Music degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. Mr. Goines is Artistic Director of the Juilliard Institute for Jazz Studies and serves as Education Consultant to Jazz at Lincoln Center. A member of the LCJO since 1993, Mr. Goines is also an acclaimed solo artist and leads his own quintet, with several commercially available recordings. He has performed and recorded with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Wynton Marsalis, Ellis Marsalis, Wycliffe Gordon, Marcus Roberts, Smithsonian Masterworks Orchestra, Terence Blanchard, Ruth Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Freddie Hubbard, James Moody, Dianne Reeves, and a host of other renowned musicians and ensembles in a wide variety of genres.

Tony Hoagland was born in 1953 in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He explores the spiritual bereftness of American satisfaction, creating poetry that is scathing, funny, rich, and refreshingly intelligent. His collections of poetry include What Narcissism Means to Me (2003); Donkey Gospel (1998), which received the James Laughlin Award; and Sweet Ruin (1992), winner of the 1992 Brittingham Prize in Poetry and the Zacharis Award from Emerson College. His other honors include two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and a fellowship to the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center. He currently teaches at the University of Pittsburgh.

Performing with Victor Goines are the New Orleans Syncopated Swingers: Wycliffe Gordon, trombone; Brandon Lee, trumpet; Aaron Diehl, piano; Yasushi Nakamura, bass; and Marion Felder, drums.
