The Ventura Jazz Orchestra makes its concert debut at the Libby Bowl in Ojai on October 11th from 7pm to 10pm, as part of a benefit concert for the Ojai Library.

The band's founder Dean Adams explains the outfit's origins: “Back in May, 2008 I wrote this article sharing my vision about starting a Jazz Big Band. I remember when I was younger (I'm 45 now), walking down a street fair checking out the booths and enjoying the smell of barbecue in the air, when I heard the sound of trumpets and drums in the distance. The closer I got to the sound the more I could hear that is was a jazzy swing tune. As I got closer I heard the throaty sound of saxophones and the mellow tone of trombones filling the air. When I turned the corner the sound of tinkling ivory and a bass player thumping up and down the scales came through. “Oh my gosh" ( I said to my self) it's a big band. I hurried to get closer and then the whole band came alive. I was so excited, there were 17 musicians dancing in their seats, blowing out solos, grooving to the beat, and just having a great time. That was a fun time and ever since I always look for a big band playing somewhere, but they are few and far between".

Tickets are $15, from Ojai Library - telephone: (001) 805 646 1639.
