The newest of new music will be heard in the new year with the arrival of the latest original programming from 88.9 FM Serious Jazz.

Debuting on Saturday, January 13th at 8:00 am, “Straight, No Chaser" will feature two critics, Edward Blanco and Mark Hayes, playing and discussing their picks from the most recent jazz releases from around the world. “Straight, No Chaser" can be heard every other Saturday on 88.9 FM in South Florida and online at seriousjazz.org.

“Straight, No Chaser" will more often than not aim beyond familar names and major label releases to find the best up and coming artists from small and independent record companies and digital distributors. No town is too small, no country is too distant to attract the attentive ears of critics like Ed and Mark.

Born and raised in New York and except for the two years he returned to the Big Apple for graduate studies, Ed Blanco has made Miami his home since 1969. A career public servant, Ed has been a senior administrator with the City of Miami for over twenty-three years and has served on countless government advisory boards, ran for public office twice, and served as president of the Kendall Federation of Homeowner's Association (KFHA). Ed is also a lifelong Yankees and recent Marlins fan.

A member of WDNA, Ed has been listening to jazz for over thirty years since the days of WBUS, The Magic Bus, in the early 70s, the first full-time jazz station in Miami. These days Ed's passion for jazz has led him to become a part-time jazz critic through his many professional CD and concert music reviews. A member of the Jazz Journalist Association (JJA), Ed is a regular contributor to All About Jazz, Ejazznews and Jazzreview--all major jazz music internet web sites.

Many of Ed's latest articles can be found at his All About Jazz page.

Mark Hayes is a native of New England and resident of Florida since 1994.

A writer and educator who's been living in Miami since 2002, Mark teaches literature and composition at Palmer Trinity School and serves also as the institution's Director of the Center for Writing. He is a member of the National Book Critics Circle, the National Council of Teachers of English, and the Society for American Baseball Research.

His reviews and essays have appeared in the Miami Herald, the Atlanta Journal Constitution, and the St. Petersburg Times, and for the website Flak Magazine, among other places. Mark is also a lifelong Red Sox and recent Marlins fan.

A member of WDNA since 2004, Mark began his weekly feature “Passing Notes" in December of that year and, as the station's Critic-At-Large, has produced over 100 pieces. He is an active supporter of South Florida's theatre community and a regular participant in the Miami Book Fair International. In August of 2006, Mark began hosting Early Jazz Weekend Session on Saturdays and Sundays.

His “Passing Notes" weblog is updated several times weekly and can be found at markehayes.com.
