New York, New York To celebrate St. Lucia's musical heritage, the island is hosting its first annual St. Lucia Music Awards on February 29, 2008 at the Gaiety Convention Center on Rodney Bay.

“We are thrilled to introduce this new tradition to the island," says Lorine Charles-St. Jules, St. Lucia's director of marketing for North America. “We take great pride in our music and hope that the St. Lucia Music Awards will increase confidence among our artists and visibility for St. Lucian music in the Caribbean and international music industry."

Created to raise the profile of St. Lucian performers and the St. Lucian music industry, this year's music awards ceremony will recognize songwriters, artists and producers who have created or rendered the most outstanding works throughout the year.

Twenty-three awards will be given to outstanding St. Lucian musicians during the show in categories such as Best Groovy Soca Single of the Year; Best Jazz Single of the Year; Band of the Year; Female Artist of the Year; Male Artist of the Year; Instrumentalist of the Year; Album of the Year; and Best New Artist of the Year. A Lifetime Achievement Award will also be presented to an individual who has made an outstanding long-term contribution to the national music industry.

The awards will be a formal invitation-only event featuring a selection of live performances by both St. Lucian and celebrity guests. The show's host and the award presenters will be well-known icons from both the local and regional entertainment and business sectors.

The St. Lucia Music Awards are being produced by Accela Marketing in collaboration with the Cultural Development Foundation (CDF), the Hewanorra Musical Society (HMS) and the St. Lucia Association of Musicians and Performers (STAMP).
