Stellar Cast of Contemporary Hip Hop & Dance Producers Rework Peerless Catalog of Postwar Jazz

April 17, 2006 - Duke Jordan meets Jazzy Jeff? Cal Tjader meets Large Professor? Curtis Fuller meets A Tribe Called Quest? Absolutely! Although it's been half a century since the heyday of Savoy Records - the celebrated home of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Cannonball Adderley, among many other giants of modern jazz - those recordings not only remain potent on their own terms, they have more than enough flavor to serve as the launching pads for sympathetic reworkings by present-day producers active in the worlds of hip-hop and dance music. Indeed, hiphop deejays and producers have been sampling and otherwise reworking jazz recordings for more than 30 years. Likewise, international dance music has always been famously wide open to different influences, certainly including jazz.

So here is Re-Bop, the brainchild of producers Joshua Sherman, Savoy's Sr. Director A&R/Marketing, and Stu Fine, the former proprietor of Wild Pitch Records, a seminal rap music label of the late Eighties and early Nineties. The two of them have reached out to an all-star cast of producers and deejays and invited them to reshape the groundbreaking experimental jazz of mid-20th Century America for the dancers and music lovers of the 21st.

RE*BOP: THE SAVOY REMIXES is in stores May 9.
