On May 17, 2009, at 6 pm, Matthew Shipp walked through the front door of Roulette, a performance venue on the Lower East Side in New York City, for a recording session for his sixth solo album, 4D - his second for Thirsty Ear.

The only people present for the session were the recording engineer; the record producer, Peter Gordon; and a group of four people who sat in chairs midway between the piano and the mastering board at the back of the room. One of those four people was AAJ Contributor Lyn Horton, and she recounts the session, as well as a history of Shipp's solo recordings, in her informative profile, Matthew Shipp: Traversing The Regions of the Mind, published today at AAJ.

To celebrate the release of 4D on January 26, 2010, AAJ is also providing additional extensive coverage:

  1. Read John Sharpe's insightful review, also published today;

  2. Download the title track to 4D, today's AAJ Daily Download;

  3. Listen to Jason Crane's Jazz Session interview;
