On Saturday, November 12, 2005, the Makanda Project will perform at the Firehouse Center for the Arts in Newburyport, Ma. The concert begins at 7:30 pm. There will also be a jazz improvisation workshop at 4:00 pm. The number for the Firehouse is 978-462-7336.
The Makanda Project is an effort by a group of Boston musicians to bring to light some incredible music that would otherwise have remained unheard. When the great multi-instrumentalist Makanda Ken McIntyre passed in 2001, he left around 400 compositions that had not been recorded. McIntyre had unique gifts and conceptions as a composer, and this body of work is full of pieces that represent his compositional talent at its best.
The group consists of Kurtis Rivers, alto saxophone and clarinet; Salim Washington, tenor saxophone, flute, and oboe; Sean Berry, tenor saxophone, flute, and clarinet; Charlie Kohlhase, baritone saxophone; Josiah Woodson, trumpet and flute; Bill Lowe, trombone; John Kordalewski, piano and arrangements; John Lockwood, bass; and Yoron Israel, drums.
