On March 1, 2006, the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia held a press conference to announce its schedule of programs for the 2006-2007 concert season. Below is a listing of jazz events and related programs of interest to jazz fans.

Of special significance will be the September 15th, 2006 program featuring vocalist Nancy Wilson and Trudy Pitts. Ms. Pitts, one of the truly great jazz organists, will perform on the newly minted Fred J. Cooper Memorial Organ in Verizon Hall. This will be the first time the organ will be used for a jazz event, and the sound should be spectacular.

Also of particular note is the series entitled Mellon Jazz Up Close: The Roots of Jazz. Curated by Danilo Perez, this year's series emphasizes African, blues and gospel roots, and also offers a glimpse into “The Future of Jazz".

In honor of New Orleans, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band appears. And mainstays like Sonny Rollins, McCoy Tyner, and Toots Thielemans will also perform in various concerts. And much, much more.

Finally, I selected a few concerts, such as a tribute to Ray Charles, which are not part of the jazz series but should interest the jazz community.

You can go over the list below, mark your calendars to “save the date" for the events you like, and purchase tickets when they become available. For further information, ticket purchases, and a complete listing of Kimmel Center Programs, visit www.kimmelcenter.org
