November 12, 2007 Washington, DC (AYS)--The 2004 New York JVC Jazz Festival Special Event, It's a Hardbop Life has been released on Youtube (go to americanyouthsymphony.org for the link).
The play, written by America's Hot Musician judge and trombonist Gregory Charles Royal, is the first play to feature an entire cast of jazz musicians. The cast includes former Duke Ellington Orchestra trombomist Gregory Charles Royal, Chris Albert-trumpet,Brooks Giles-tenor sax, Marcus Persiani-piano, Ken Crutchfield- drums and Kyle Younger and Christina Pitrelli.
The play was inspired by Royal's relationship as a teen with Art Blakey, whom he lived with in Manhattan in 1978. The play also explores the dynamics and history of modern jazz as they relate to hip hop culture and some suburban sensibilities about jazz.
