THE JAZZ COMPOSERS COLLECTIVE
BEGINS ITS TENTH SEASON

with a concert celebrating the release of STRANGE CITY
the new CD by THE HERBIE NICHOLS PROJECT

New School Jazz Performance Space, NYC
Thursday, October 18, 2001

The Jazz Composers Collective kicks off its tenth season on Thursday, October 18, at 8:00 p.m., at the New School's Jazz Performance Space (55 West 13th Street, NYC) with a concert celebrating the release of the Herbie Nichols Project's new CD, Strange City (Palmetto Records). Admission is $10 ($5 students/seniors). Please call 212-995-1552 for more information.

The Herbie Nichols Project, an ensemble premiered by the Jazz Composers Collective in 1994, is dedicated to the music of the brilliant but under-recognized composer-pianist. Co-led by pianist FRANK KIMBROUGH and bassist BEN ALLISON, the band includes RON HORTON (trumpet), TED NASH (saxophones), MICHAEL BLAKE (saxophones), WYCLIFFE GORDON (trombone), and MATT WILSON (drums). Strange City is the Project's third CD and features eight compositions that Nichols himself never recorded.

Pianist-composer FRANK KIMBROUGH is a founding member and composer-in-residence of the Jazz Composers Collective. Frank's discography as a leader includes: the trio recordings Chant (IGMOD) and Lonely Woman (Mapleshade Records); Noumena (Soul Note Records); and a duo recording with vibraphonist Joe Locke titled Saturn's Child (OmniTone Records). He also can be heard on recent recordings by Ben Allison, Michael Blake, Kendra Shank, and the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra. He has two forthcoming CDs on Omnitone Records: The Willow (with Joe Locke) and Quickening (a trio with Ben Allison and Jeff Ballard recorded live a Jazz Composers Collective concert).

Bassist-composer BEN ALLISON has been steadily building a reputation as an original voice in modern jazz, a strong organizational force on the New York City music scene, and an advocate for artist empowerment. At the age of 25, Ben formed the Jazz Composers Collective. He serves as the organization's Artistic Director and is one of five composers-in-residence. Ben's four recordings as a leader - Riding the Nuclear Tiger (2001), Third Eye (1999), and Medicine Wheel (1998) on Palmetto Records, and his 1996 debut Seven Arrows on the Koch Jazz label - showcase his forward-thinking vision as a producer, composer, arranger, designer and bassist, and his hands-on approach to his craft.
