First performance of Penn Presents 09/10 Jazz Series

(Philadelphia, PA) Described by USA Today as simply sumptuous, Grammy- nominated jazz vocalist Jane Monheit returns to the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts to perform highlights from her most recent album The Lovers, The Dreamers and Me on Saturday, September 19, 2009 at 8:00 PM. Tickets for the performance are $20-$45. For tickets or for more information, please visit AnnenbergCenter.org or call 215.898.3900. Tickets can also be purchased in person at the Annenberg Center Box Office. This is the first performance of the 09/10 Penn Presents Jazz Series, which features an incredible lineup of artists representing all forms of jazz, including Herb Alpert & Lani Hall, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and Dee Dee Bridgewater.

A tribute to singers and songwriters Ms. Monheit admires, The Lovers, The Dreamers and Me features the songs of contemporary songwriters including Fiona Apple, Corrine Bailey Rae and Paul Simon alongside the great standards by Cole Porter, Leonard Bernstein and Jimmy Dorsey. The album, praised by Billboard Magazine as a collection of elegantly delivered smooch songs, is a change of pace from Ms. Monheit's previous albums and reflects her natural progression as an artist. I wanted to do something different with this record, says Monheit, and so I chose songs that meant a lot to me in many different ways and from a wide range of songwriters and genres from female artists my age to celebrated legends. The albums title, taken from the lyrics to the Rainbow Connection, the famous Muppets tune, is in tribute to her young son Jack, who was born during the recording of the album.

In the few short years since Ms. Monheit's 2002 Annenberg Center debut she has established herself as one of the post-millennial jazz world's foremost vocalists. A New York native, she developed her voice at the Manhattan School of Music. In 1998, she finished second runner-up in the Thelonious Monk Institute Vocal Competition, the youngest in the history of the competition.

Her success was followed by a record contract and the release of her debut album, Never Never Land, which remained on the Billboard Jazz chart for over a year and was voted Best Debut Recording by the members of the Jazz Journalists Association. Her second release, Come Dream With Me, landed atop the Billboard Jazz charts and also earned a Grammy nomination.

Ms. Monheit's 2007 critically-lauded album Surrender debuted at number one on the Billboard Jazz chart as well. She continues to tour and perform in front of sold-out audiences worldwide with her band Michael Kanan on piano, Neal Miner on bass, and her husband, Rick Montalbano on drums. Said Time Magazine of Monheit, Jane Monheit can't miss. She has, in a word, everything.
