American jazz icon James Moody joins top, international talent at 3-day fall event

Solvang, CA--With a world class lineup of international Jazz legends and bright new stars, the 2008 Solvang Jazz Festival is set to bring the thrill and excitement of Jazz and music in general to the Central Coast, September 25 through September 28, 2008. The Universal Guild for Jazz and Progressive Music is pleased to announce that world-renowned, Grammy nominated saxophonist James Moody has been added to this year's stellar, international lineup. Moody will perform with Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band and Barbara Morrison on Friday, September 26th, from 5:30-8 p.m. at the Festival's “Swingin' the Groove" Big Band Bash & Dinner event at Solvang Veteran's Memorial Hall.

“James Moody is a living, breathing icon of what the Jazz movement is all about," said Stix Hooper, President of the Universal Guild of Jazz and Progressive Music, the nonprofit presenting the Solvang Jazz Festival - and founder of The Crusaders . “Moody is truly a force that has shaped the Jazz culture and is instrumental in creating understanding and appreciation worldwide."

James Moody is world-renowned for his improvisational masterpiece, Moody's Mood for Love, based on his saxophone solo on a 1952 recording of one of the most popular Jazz standards of all time: I'm in the Mood for Love. He is the recipient of numerous honors from prestigious music, education and cultural organizations. For over six decades, whether playing the soprano, alto or tenor sax, flute or singing, Moody plays with deep resonance and wit. Moody has a healthy respect for tradition, but takes great delight in discovering new musical paths, which makes him one of the most consistently expressive and enduring figures in modern jazz today.

Along with Moody, The Solvang Jazz Festival is bringing artists from the world over, in a variety of jazz genres, to the Central Coast. This year's full lineup includes:



  • Friday September 26th, 5:30 - 8 p.m.: Swingin' in the Groove, Big Band Bash & Dinner Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band with Special Guests, Barbara Morrison and James Moody, Solvang Veteran's Memorial Hall Gordon Goodwin is a 3-time Emmy Winner and Barbara Morrison has performed with top Jazz and Blues artists including Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, Mel Torme and Tony Bennett. Grammy nominated saxophonist James Moody played and recorded in Dizzy Gillespie's big band along with a who's who in Jazz and some of the great artisans of our time, including Bill Cosby, Glenn Campbell, Liberace, Elvis Presley, Redd Foxx and many others. Moody is world-renowned for his improvisational masterpiece, Moody's Mood for Love.

  • Friday September 26th, 9:00 p.m.: A Hip Improvisational Evening of Jazz, Nightclub Performance Jean-Michel Pilc Trio and Frank Marocco, Royal Scandinavian Inn According to the New York Times, French pianist Jean-Michel Pilc is “...a dazzlingly inventive pianist." Accordion player, Frank Marocco, has played on hundreds of movie soundtracks, TV series and specials, from Austin Powers 3 to Dr. Zhivago; and performed or recorded with a veritable “who's who" of the music industry, from Nina Simone to Pink Floyd.

  • Saturday, September 27th, 1:00 p.m.: Groovin' in the Park, Free Outdoor Concert The Solvang Jazz Consortium with Joel Scott, Solvang Park Joel Scott is the former keyboard player for 5-time Grammy Award winner, Dionne Warwick. The Solvang Jazz Consortium was created as an homage to the community.

  • Saturday, September 27th, 7:00 p.m.: All Star Jazz Concert Monty Alexander Trio with Special Guest Dr. Lonnie Smith on the Hammond B3 Organ, featuring Hassan Shaku and Herlin Riley, Solvang Veteran's Memorial Hall Jamaican pianist Monty Alexander has recorded or performed with Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones and more. Dr. Lonnie Smith has played with Miles Davis and Rahsaan Roland Kirk.

  • Sunday, September 28th, 3:00 p.m.: Hot Salsa Dr. Bobby Rodriguez & his Latin Jazz Orchestra, Solvang Veteran's Memorial Hall Dr. Bobby Rodriguez is a Grammy nominated trumpet player, band leader and educator. He has earned 1 gold record and 3 platinum records. His musicianship is in demand and he has performed/recorded with acclaimed musicians including Quincy Jones, Tito Puente, Herbie Hancock and more.



The Solvang Jazz Festival aims to promote awareness and appreciation of America's indigenous musical art form - jazz - and provides local educational opportunities including competitions for students ages 10 to 19 and a workshop program led by local and guest artists and educators. Competition winners will be given financial assistance to help further their musical education.
