Valentine's Love and Jazz

On February 14th at 8pm in the Peter J. Sharp Theater @ Symphony Space a wonderful musical program will take place. Producer Joel Kramer describes how he came to produce this show in a most serendipitous manner. “I was exchanging tickets at NYU for “Music of Sinatra to Dance" for another date." I" was headed back to the subway when I passed Cornelia Street and noticed that people were setting up for a block party which I was told was to begin at 7 pm."

“I went to eat dinner and came back in an hour, just in time to catch the start of a most amazing concert. The performance included three generations of very talented musicians hailing from Vancouver, Canada. A grandfather, 77 years young, who lead the two hour and twenty minute no intermission show with his two sons and grandsons. By the time the extravaganza ended I had taken off my suit jacket and dress shirt, purchased their $5 tee-shirt, and wore it while cheering along with the hundreds of other fans who were equally enthralled with the show. Later, after their performance, I was fortunate enough to meet the musical family - the Arntzens, and immediately found that their musical talents were equaled by the content of their character."

“A few weeks later I attended a Duke Ellington Society meeting at St. Peter's Cathedral. I met a debonair 80 year old fellow society member, John Rainbow, who began to tell me that he was going to perform at Marjorie Eliot's Parlor Entertainment at 555 Edgecombe Avenue on Sunday at 4pm and I happily accepted his invitation."

“Rainbow's performance was sensational as was the performance of the hostess, Marjorie Eliot. The setting was that of a salon with all its intimacy and grandeur. John later introduced me to Marjorie, the playwright, pianist, singer, producer, and... Marjorie also has music in the genes. Her family, which includes two generations of musicians, all possess the same talent and character as Marjorie and provide equally impressive entertainment. The experience at Ms. Eliot's apartment was as inspiring as the block party performance by the Arntzens a few weeks earlier and it was only natural that I put 2 and 2 together and came up with 14 - as in February 14th - a Love and Jazz Concert showcasing the seductive musical skills of two passionate jazz families." “So, I've brought together 2 families of musical educators and performing artists, from two countries, to New York City. Just to give an idea of the range of the show, on percussion alone the show will feature a 77 year old musician-drummer, the legendary Al Drears who played with Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong and a 14 year old phenom-drummer, Miles Arnstzen who just completed a Converse commercial."

“And so come to Symphony Space on February 14th and get to experience the joy and great pleasure which I and so many others have already experienced and are going back for more. You will also get a chance to personally meet the performers. It is sure to be forever memorable in the happiest of ways."
