Jazz pianist Cyrus Chestnut, one of the foremost artists in his field of jazz, will make a special appearance to perform and sign autographs in celebration of the release of his latest album Cyrus Plays Elvis at J&R Music and Computer World (23 Park Row) on Tuesday, October 9 at 12:30 PM. Chestnut's latest album, released during the 25th year commemorating Elvis' death, will feature songs from the Elvis songbook including Hound Dog," Don't Be Cruel," and Suspicious Minds."
Cyrus Chestnut began his musical career at the tender age of 5, studying piano under his father. Along the way to becoming an exceptional pianist and composer, Chestnut was trained through childhood performances at the Mount Calvary Star Baptist Church in his hometown of Baltimore. By the age of nine, Chestnut was enrolled in the prep program at the Peabody Institute, and went on to graduate from Berklee with a degree in jazz composition and arranging. Chestnut would become a seasoned performer through his work with Betty Carter, Dizzy Gillespie, Jon Hendricks, Branford and Wynton Marsalis, operatic superstar Kathleen Battle, and many more. He would release his first solo album at the age of 30, beginning his catalog of albums that would win numerous awards from the world's leading jazz publications. Chestnut's latest album contains familiar music, though with his group - bassist Dezron L. Douglas and drummer Neal Smith - they take the basics through different landscapes of imagination.
