Thu Jan 05 ARTISTS' SALON This is a monthly opportunity for artists associated with the cafe-- from every genre and every generation, past, present, and future--to gather informally, schmooze, re-invent the world, and hoist a glass of quelque chose (the only kind of chose to hoist). Our glorious curators are present, you can buttonhole them to find out what's cooking, you can introduce yourself to other toilers in the vineyard, invent projects and discover collaborators. Beat Night NYC had its premier performance at The Cornelia St Cafe in January 2004. Since the start our shows have been a smashing success, filling the room.

Beat Night is a series that began 8 years ago in Portsmouth, NH by NYC guitarist and composer Larry Simon. The event is an hour long evening of spoken word and live music. Each performance features up to five readers, accompanied by The Larry Simon Ensemble (plus guests). Beat Night NYC is scheduled to occur four times a year, one per season.

Beat Night has been a huge success in New England, filling the room every month at Portsmouth's famed club, “The Press Room". The coming together of spoken word and music has existed as long as those disciplines have existed, from ancient Greece up to the present. Under Larry Simon's musical direction Beat Night offers a fresh take on this ancient pleasure. Simon will be bringing his award winning ensemble to NY every month along with special guests.

Beat Night is a play on words implying both the musical meaning of “beat" and the obvious reference to The Beats, a modern inspiration for the music/spoken word collaboration. The aesthetic of Beat Night is wide open to all styles.

Guitarist/Composer Larry Simon has worked with many of today's leading jazz, blues and experimental artists including: John Zorn, LaMonte Young, David Sanborn, Big Jay McNeely, Lester Bowie, Rosco Gordon, George Coleman, Julius Hemphill, the Skatellites, David Amram and many others.
