The Leif Arntzen Band In Concert “Channeling Chet" To experience The Leif Arntzen Band’s “Channeling Chet” is to be transported to a time and a place not so far from the here and now, yet a world away. Chet Baker represented, to an entire generation of Americans, the embodiment of “cool.” When he burst onto the post-World War II jazz scene in the 1950s, he was instantly idolized not only for his exceptional jazz trumpet playing and singing, the soundtrack of the ultimately tragic search for perfect romance in an imperfect world, but for his devastating good looks and the fragile, tormented soul that they were unable to conceal. Leif Arntzen is uniquely qualified to capture the aura of Chet Baker. His love for music in general, and jazz in particular, has been the guiding force in his life. But there is more here than the coincidence of trumpet and voice. Leif shares a real aesthetic connection to Baker. When the lights come up on the band and the solitary, long, lanky man with the horn, audiences are smitten before a note has been sounded. The essential components of the Baker mystique are immediately and startlingly present: the otherworldly combination of the possibility of romance and the certainty of longing. And then the music begins.
