Already one of the largest cities in the state, Chandler is growing more sophisticated as well. One of the premier events on the downtown social calendar is the yearly jazz festival.
The ninth annual Chandler Jazz Festival this spring drew an estimated 20,000 people over three days, besting the previous high of 8,000. It included free concerts in A.J. Chandler Park and ticketed events at the Center for the Arts featuring national acts.
Last year we took it to another level," Special Events Coordinator Hermelinda Llamas said.
The 2008 festival also featured more vendors and artists than past years and there was also a beer and wine garden.
Another component of the festival was a Battle of the Youth Bands on the final day. Llamas worked in conjunction with Jazz in Az, which helps promote music in the area. She said next year's festival will include giving a local high school group the chance to open for one of the visiting national acts.
